Just downloaded humviewer, and it looks pretty cool, only thing is I have never seen an option on my unit to record side imaging data? I have upgraded to the newest firmware on my unit, but have really not explored all its functionality. Any advice or tips welcome.

I found this youtube how-to to be helpful:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6syxV4juFk&feature=player_embedded

if you keep pushing the view button you should get to the record screen, then hit menu and select start recording. I just got my units first trip completed this morning and I did notice three things when recording:
There was some noticeable lag switching between views/screens - sometimes 5 seconds long
Could not change chart speed during recording
Accidentally pushed the power button to turn unit off without stopping the recording, now I cannot get that ".dat" file to open in humviewer.

Those items aside I'm really excited to read through these forums more. Did you just get your unit as well?

Here is the latest chapter from the HB manual on recordings and snapshots.

Hope this helps,

If you are not finding the "Recording" view , it may be hidden in the views...

Click "Menu" twice
Tab over to the "Views" tab
Search down thru the views until you get to the "Recording" view and make sure it is set to "Visable"

Two things I have noticed:

the recording screen cannot be saved as one of three favorite views

While recording a movie, when you mark an object there is no snapshot saved to that waypoint. I made this mistake and wanted to record everything on my first trip but also create waypoints/snapshots, when I came home I noticed none of the waypoints had screenshots attached. There is another thread where someone asked how to asscociate a snapshot with a waypoint after the fact of placing the waypoint but no responses yet.

I have successfully created waypoints in HB PC and uploaded them to the control head but that's it.

I have the recording view set as my 3rd preset button...

Not sure why your's will not allow this...

Also, I agree it would be nice to be able to mark waypoints while recording...but I view my recordings at home in Humviewer and mark waypoints to be transferred into HBPC and then uploaded into the unit

I seem to be able to find more interesting stuff in Humviewer anyway...Be it the larger pc viewing or maybe just because I actually have time to study the images while viewing in Humviewer...

I'll try to set the recording screen to one of my favorites again - i swear I tried it while on the water and the unit kept beeping like I pushed an invalid selection. Oh well it's good news that it works!

When you mark way points at home does it associate a screen shot with it? I have manually created waypoints off of lat/longitude but didn't see an option to add any screenshots/pictures

First make sure you don't have any express menus or other menus up on your recording view screen before you try to set the recording view as one of your presets...the beep you may be hearing could be teling you to exit all menus before setting a preset...

Next,
While viewing a recording at home on the HB unit....Hit "Menu" twice, cursor over to "Accessories", make sure "Snapshots" is "Enabled"...
You can create a waypoint/snapshot by : enable the active cursor by pressing the 4way cursor button, move the cursor over the point you want to create the waypoint/snapshot, press the "Mark" button. this will create a waypoint at the point where your cursor is..plus it will create a snapshot of everything that is showing on your screen at the time of pressing "Mark".
If you press the "mark" button without the active cursor enabled..the unit will create a waypoint of the current boat position and a snapshot of everything that is showing on the screen at the time of pressing "Mark". Just remember...active cursor-waypoint at cursor....no active cursor-waypoint at boat position...

Now,
While viewing the recording in Humviewer...Anytime during the playback of the recording..you can stop the recording, click on the "utilities" button in the upper right of the screen, click "Create waypoint", click anywhere on the SI screen and create a waypoint at that point. I'm pretty sure you can also create a snapshot in Humviewer, but I'd have to refresh my own memory with how to do that . I'm also pretty sure that the snapshot created in Humviewer cannot be uploaded back into the HB unit as it's in the wrong format for the HB unit to recognize it...
